Shy (live) 04:29
me and all the kids from the neighborhood we play out in the street all summer long the rule was we had to go home at night when the streetlights came on we were oblivious to the rest of the world we’d hold up the cars in the street yeah, we’d always play boys against girls and both sides would cheat strange men would stop their cars at the curb say hey sweetheart, come here i’d go up to the window and they’d have their dick out in their hand and a sick little sneer i’d say here we go again yeah, o.k. this time you win and i would feel dirty and i’d feel ashamed but i wouldn’t let it stop my game we would play hide and go seek the territory would be the whole block sometimes the older boys when they’d find you they wouldn’t wanna tag you they’d just wanna talk they’d say what would you do for a quarter come on, we don’t have that much time and i’d think a minute and i’d say o.k. give me the quarter first fine this time you win here we go again and i would feel dirty and i would feel ashamed but i wouldn’t let it stop my game i remember my first trip alone on the greyhound bus a man put his hands on me as soon as night fell i remember when i was leaving how excited i was i remember when i arrived i didn’t feel so well i remember the teacher at school got me so sick and scared that i went into the bathroom and threw up in my hair and i could go on but you know what it just gets worse and i should probably stop there girl the next time he wants to know what your problem is girl next time he wants to know where the anger comes from just tell him this time the problem’s his just tell him the anger just comes

If there was ever a record to help you pull through until the next time the Folksinger makes her way to your town, Living In Clip is the one (or two discs). Affectionately named after the state of stage amps about to blow out, the record is constructed like a show complete with the onstage humor and antics we love. The culmination of years of studio work and constant touring, Living In Clip is a tour in itself: nearly two-dozen venues provide the atmosphere for over two hours of music complete with intermission and encore. Recorded straight from the soundboard on an 8 track ADAT, digital videotape and mixed at The Congress House in Austin by Ani and the man behind the monitors, Andrew Gilchrist – Living In Clip is conceptually designed to preserve the authenticity and pulse of a live show.

The set list is massive, consisting of long time favorites and new ones, debuts, orchestras(!), stories, poetry, musings all swirling around in their most natural habitat. Ani's vision for the record selections are "songs that have changed a lot since their first appearance on the studio albums, songs that have mutated into something different…I tried to include songs that I know I'll never fucking play onstage again, ones I've forgotten, and some obscure ones too."

The three-piece touring contingent also hosts Mr. Andy Stochansky on drums and his partner in crime Miss Sara Lee on bass.

There are jazzy folkalicious renditions of "Letter to A John," "Fire Door," "Diner" and "Anticipate." Amusing and sweet snippets are interwoven throughout the songs and sometimes during them - "Out of Habit" harbors a little cinematic glimpse into Ani's first days in New York City. This dynamic collection also offers The Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra playing on "Both Hands" and "Amazing Grace" at a hockey arena as well as a phenomenal version of "Shy," that was nominated for a Grammy for Best Rock Vocal Performance – Female (or whatever). Living In Clip is also considered one of Rolling Stone Magazine's essential albums of the 90's.

Living In Clip includes a beautiful 36-page family photo album that contains pictures of the sparkling faces, questionable attire and unique persons behind the road show. There's even a photo of the smiling Righteous Babe office crew back home in Buffalo.

The Players: Ani, Andy and Sara (and the Buffalo Philharmonic)

Misc. Living In Clip is Ani's first gold record. Ani's liner notes detail the process of making this album and are a brilliant read.
